Merano High Mountain Trail»

Merano High Mountain Trail The Merano High Mountain Trail is one of the most beautiful circular hiking routes in South Tyrol (Italy). It runs around the edge of the Texel Group National Park and circles the Texel group of mountains covering a distance of approximately 100 kilometres at an almost constant altitude of approx. 1,400 metres. There are numerous points where differences in altitude of several hundred metres must be overcome.

The Merano High Mountain Trail trail is numbered “24” and was formally opened in 1985 in Katharinaberg (in the district of Schnals) in the Schnals Valley. The main initiators for the creation of the Merano High Mountain Trail and the Texel Group National Park were the then chairman of the Meran Alpine Association, Helmut Ellmenreich (d. 2002) and the then route marker, Robert Schoenweger.
For the most part, when planning and constructing the Merano High Mountain Trail, existing historic trails that had been used for many hundreds of years by mountain farmers were incorporated and joined to create a unique hiking trail.
Depending on fitness levels and stage lengths, to hike the entire Meraner Hoehenweg takes between 3 and 8 days.
Along the Merano High Mountain Trail there are snack stations, inns and refuges at regular intervals offering food and accommodation, as well as protection from rain and bad weather.

The Spronser Lakes»

The Spronser Lakes The ten Spronser lakes, the largest collection of lakes in the high alpine region, can be found to the north west of Dorf Tirol, at the heart of the Texel group of mountains at around 2,500 metres above sea level. These enchanting mountain lakes form one of the most beautiful and significant groups of lakes in South Tyrol, with Langsee lake (1 km long and almost 300 metres wide) also being one of the largest in the country. The route around the lakes requires a certain amount of stamina, but in return offers rewards aplenty for the experienced hiker with countless new and wonderful views from different perspectives.
The most beautiful group of mountain lakes in South Tyrol is so high that even in summer there is often snow on their shores. The Spronser lakes supply a large part of the city of Meran and its surroundings with water.
The flora and fauna at this altitude are also noteworthy and absolutely fascinating. A visit to the Spronser lakes is a visit to a truly special place.
